Uncommon Seabird Patient: Kittiwake in Care at WCNC

Black-legged Kittiwake #25-38

March 16, 2025

This patient was admitted after it was found on the beach in Manzanita, OR. Suffering from emaciation and an eye injury, staff got the bird rehydrated and started on a nutritional tubing diet to treat the emaciation as well as medications to target the eye injury. Now able to eat whole fish on its own, the kittiwake is spending time in our indoor filtered pool while staff continues to treat the eye injury. Prognosis is guarded, but staff remain hopeful for this uncommon patient’s recovery!

This uncommon seabird patient is now strong enough to eat whole fish on its own, a key step in rehabilitation.
