Wildlife Center of the North Coast Receives Grant from the Dryden Family Foundation

The Wildlife Center of the North Coast (WCNC) is upgrading seabird care with a new in-ground pool, funded by a $16,210 grant from the Dryden Family Foundation. The pool will provide pelicans and other aquatic birds a safe space to rebuild waterproofing and strength before release. The grant also supports education programs, including camp scholarships, youth outreach, and intern support.

ASTORIA, OR — The Wildlife Center of the North Coast (WCNC) is excited to announce a major upgrade to its seabird rehabilitation facility, thanks to a $16,210 grant from the Dryden Family Foundation.

The grant will fund a new in-ground pool in WCNC’s 150-foot flight enclosure, replacing aging tubs with a larger, more accessible space for pelicans and other aquatic birds to regain waterproofing and strength needed for release. Construction begins in early July, led by local contractor Tidewater Renovation.

“This upgrade is a critical improvement for recovering patients,” said Executive Director Kari Henningsgaard. “We’re so grateful to the Dryden Family Foundation for making it possible.”

The grant also supports WCNC’s education programs, including summer camp scholarships, expanded youth outreach, and intern support. “Thanks to this funding, every child who requested financial assistance for camp this year received it,” said Henningsgaard.

Wildlife Center interns gain hands-on experience in animal care and conservation education, supported by the Dryden Family Foundation grant.

Founded in 1997, WCNC is the only wildlife rehabilitation and conservation education center on Oregon’s North Coast, specializing in seabird care and serving hundreds of animals and thousands of people each year. To learn more or get involved, visit www.coastwildlife.org.
