Little Brown Bat Returns to the Wild

Insectivorous bats hibernate during the winter when food is scarce. This little brown bat was found soaking wet on the ground at the rescuer’s home in Gearhart, likely due to a hibernation disturbance. After drying off and warming up at WCNC, they were determined to be underweight, but no injuries were found. Staff administered fluids and provided supportive care, including feedings several times daily, until temperatures became warm enough for release. After gaining a gram (about a quarter of its weight!) and spending just over 2 weeks in care, this bat was successfully released at the location where it was found.

You can invite bats like this one to your property by planting native plants, which attract insects that bats love to eat! In the Pacific Northwest, blue and red elderberry, kinnikinnick, snowberry, and Western serviceberry are all great options. Check with your local extension service for information about native plants in your area!
